I tell myself that I exercise for health benefits. I tell myself that it’s to be in shape, to be strong, to have a healthy heart. But in the end, truth be told, trips to the gym are in order merely to counter trips to places like Tartes. Working out is to work off the delights sold behind the window at this teacup-sized bakeshop. In fact, in a reverse sort of logic, a place like Tartes might be the best thing I could do for my heart because it’s so motivating. The more I work out, the more treats from here. A decadent chocolate cake? A peanut butter cookie? Why not? My heart will love me for it.
